Solitary Victory Powder

Dokseung-san

한글 독승산  ·  Pinyin Du Sheng San

獨勝散

The Donguibogam has three distinct formulas named 獨勝散 and this is the third: the Sweating chapter's is 五倍子ㆍ白礬 packed into the navel, registered as dokseung-san, and the Abscesses chapter's is 香附子 alone, registered as dokseung-san-ongjeo. This leaf is the 得效's oil-steeped licorice knot, so it takes the chapter tail, following the dokseung-san-ongjeo precedent.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治蠱毒及藥毒ㆍ蟲蛇諸毒. 大甘草節, 麻油浸, 年歲愈多愈妙. 右取甘草嚼下, 或以水煎服, 神效. 《得效》

Translation

Treats worm toxin and drug toxin, and all the toxins of insects and snakes. The large knots of licorice root, steeped in sesame oil — the more years it has stood, the better. Take the licorice and chew it down, or decoct it in water and drink it; divine effect. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Licorice alone, which is what 獨勝, solitary victory, names, and the one drug the whole chapter trusts: the 醫鑑 line a page earlier states the general law as 大法甘草菉豆能解百毒 — the great rule is that licorice and mung bean can resolve the hundred toxins. 甘豆湯 is the same idea decocted, and 國老飮 pairs the same root with alum. What is particular here is the preparation. 甘草節 are the knotty swellings on the root, which the materia medica treated as a separate drug for sores and swellings, and they are laid down in sesame oil for years before use — a store kept against the day a poisoning arrives, which is why the leaf can say 年歲愈多愈妙. Licorice is not an antidote. It is harmless in a single dose, and the honest reading of this leaf is that it gave a practitioner something to do while the poisoning took its course. Taken in quantity over time licorice causes potassium loss and raised blood pressure, which matters for the long keeping this leaf recommends. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
