Translation

Treats cough from cold damage, with a hot body, sweating and a floating rapid pulse; for those who cannot take Apricot Kernel Decoction, this should be given instead. Red tangerine peel, perilla leaf, apricot kernel, white atractylodes, pinellia, mulberry root bark, fritillaria and schisandra, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, and decoct in water. — Jesaeng 濟生 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A second line after Haengja-tang, and the indication says exactly why: 身熱有汗, 脉浮數 — a hot body, sweating, and a floating rapid pulse. Haengja-tang is built on dried ginger, asarum and cinnamon, and a patient already hot and sweating cannot take it. This formula keeps the perilla leaf and the descending drugs, drops every warm one, and puts in fritillaria for the heat in the phlegm. It is one of the few places in the chapter where a formula is defined by the failure of another, and the reasoning is clinical rather than theoretical. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
