Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治燥病. 生地黃二十斤, 擣取汁去渣; 白蜜二斤, 煎沸去沫; 鹿角膠ㆍ眞酥油各一斤; 生薑二兩, 擣取汁. 右先以慢火熬地黃汁數沸, 綿濾取淨汁, 又煎二十沸, 下鹿角膠, 次下酥油及蜜, 同煎, 候如餳, 磁器收貯. 每服一二匙, 溫酒下. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats dryness disease. Raw rehmannia, 20 geun, pounded for its juice and the dregs discarded; white honey, 2 geun, boiled and the scum removed; deer-horn glue and clarified butter, 1 geun each; fresh ginger, 2 nyang, pounded for its juice. First simmer the rehmannia juice over a slow fire through several boilings, strain it through cotton for the clear juice, boil it again twenty times, put in the deer-horn glue, then the butter and the honey, and boil them together until it is like malt syrup; store it in an earthen vessel. Take one or two spoonfuls each time, sent down with warm wine. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty geun of rehmannia reduced to a syrup with honey, deer-horn glue and butter — about twelve kilos of fresh root for a jar of paste. It is the Jo chapter's answer to its own principle that dryness is treated by nourishing the blood, and the materials are chosen for what they are rather than what they do: all four are moist, fatty or mucilaginous, and the finished paste is eaten by the spoonful rather than dosed.
