Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治燥病. 天門冬 生去心, 擣絞取汁, 濾去滓, 砂鍋熬成膏, 酒服一二匙. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats dryness disease. Fresh asparagus root with the heart removed, pounded and wrung for the juice, strained free of dregs and boiled down to a paste in an earthen pan; take one or two spoonfuls in wine. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug reduced to a paste, and the simplest preparation in the chapter. Asparagus root is heavily mucilaginous, so boiling the juice down concentrates the polysaccharide rather than any alkaloid — which is to say the paste works, insofar as it works, by being slippery and sweet. Removing the heart is the standard instruction for this drug and is meant to prevent the vexation the pith is held to cause. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
