Translation

Treats cold impediment of the hands. It is also said: cold impediment is a cold body without fever and loins and legs heavy and sinking — that is, severe cold impediment. Tangkuei, red peony, astragalus, saposhnikovia, turmeric and notopterygium, 1 don 5 fun each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Astragalus and tangkuei with four moving drugs, which is the classical construction for a limb that is cold because nothing is reaching it. Turmeric and red peony move the blood, saposhnikovia and notopterygium open the way, and astragalus pushes. For cold hands in a depleted patient — Raynaud's, or simply the chronically underperfused extremity — this remains a sensible small formula and the definition it quotes, a cold body without fever and heavy sinking legs, is a recognizable clinical picture. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
