Clinical commentary 臨床

The Hoechun's phlegm-fire version of tetany, and it is the one formula in the lockjaw section that treats secretions rather than rigidity. Trichosanthes seed, fritillaria, platycodon and perilla seed move thick phlegm down; scutellaria and gardenia take the heat out; ophiopogon and ginseng replace the fluid the heat has consumed. In a patient with rigidity and copious respiratory secretions — which is most patients with tetanus — clearing the airway is the right priority, and this formula at least points at it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
