Clinical commentary 臨床

A food rather than a medicine, and the only thing in the chapter's long list of restoratives that a convalescent would eat by choice: twenty nyang of sugar to forty of medicinal powder, steamed into a rice cake and dried for keeping. Everything in it is a grain, a seed or a starchy root, and nothing in it is pharmacologically active in any strong sense. That is the point. 任意食之, eat at will, is unique in this chapter, which otherwise doses everything carefully. The problem being treated is not enough food, and the answer is a palatable and keepable form of it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
