Donguibogam

Translation

A pregnant woman takes it once she has entered her last month; it thins the fetus and makes the birth easy, and it is better than Jigak-san. Ginseng, chebula flesh, medicated leaven, barley sprout, atractylodes and red tangerine peel in equal parts. Make a coarse powder of the above and take 3 don at a time, decocted in water. — Balchwe 拔粹 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Thinning the fetus is the chapter's phrase for the whole class of formulas taken in the last weeks to make the birth quicker, and the honest thing to say about this one is that it is a digestive. Ginseng, leaven, barley sprout, atractylodes and tangerine peel are what the tradition gives for a stomach that will not empty, with chebula flesh to bind the stool. Nothing in it reaches the fetus. What it does reach is the mother's appetite, and in a woman heavily pregnant, short of breath and eating badly, that is not a trivial target. The claim that it beats Jigak-san — the bitter orange formula that was the standard thinning prescription — reads as a preference for feeding the mother over pressing down on the womb. A baby's size at birth is not something a decoction adjusts, and a birth expected to be difficult needs to be assessed rather than medicated. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
