Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治心胸毒熱. 蒲黃二兩半, 犀角二兩, 黃芩一兩半, 牛黃一兩二錢, 羚羊角ㆍ麝香ㆍ龍腦各一兩, 石雄黃八錢, 金箔一千二百箔<span class='sochu'>內四百箔爲衣</span>. 右爲末, 蜜和兩作三十丸, 金箔爲衣, 每用一丸, 熟水化服. 《醫說》

Translation

Treats toxic heat of the heart and chest. Cattail pollen 2 nyang 5 don; rhinoceros horn 2 nyang; scutellaria 1 nyang 5 don; bezoar 1 nyang 2 don; antelope horn, musk and borneol 1 nyang each; realgar 8 don; gold leaf 1,200 leaves <span class='sochu'>of which 400 are used as a coating</span>. Powder them, mix with honey and make thirty pills from each two nyang, coated with gold leaf; take one pill at a time dissolved in boiled water. — Uiseol 醫說 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twelve hundred leaves of gold in a single preparation, four hundred of them for the coating alone. This is a court medicine, and the composition says so — rhinoceros horn, antelope horn, bezoar, musk and borneol together. The presentation it treats is delirium in high fever, and the aromatic openers were held to rouse a clouded spirit. Cattail pollen leading a formula of this kind is unusual and marks it as working on the blood as well. **Contains rhinoceros horn, antelope horn and musk, all CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade; and realgar, which is arsenic sulfide.
