Method for Withering a Tumour

Goyu-bang

한글 고유방  ·  Pinyin Ku Liu Fang

枯瘤方

The transcription writes 碁子㨾; 㨾 appears nowhere in the corpus and 樣 twice, so the majority form 樣 is printed and the leaf's 碁 kept, there being no corpus instance of either 碁 or 棋. 盖 and 黃栢 are printed as the transcription has them, both being forms the corpus prints in the majority. 䃃砂 is kept as transcribed, the corpus printing 䃃 in 37 places against 10, and is registered under 硇砂. 斑猫 is the corpus form. The thirty beetles are a count and carry no weight; the rice gruel that binds the cakes and the phellodendron paste that seals them are entered, the sun-drying and the moxa being method.

Translation

Arsenic trioxide, sal ammoniac, red lead, realgar and calomel, 1 don each; thirty raw blister beetles; cinnabar, frankincense and myrrh, 1 don each. Powder the above, bind with glutinous rice gruel, pinch the paste into the shape of go stones and dry them in the sun. First burn three cones of moxa on the crown of the tumour, lay the drug cake over it, and paste phellodendron powder mixed with water on top; in a few days it withers and drops off of itself. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a dispersing prescription but an ablation. Three cones of moxa are burnt on the crown of the tumour to open the surface, a cake of nine drugs is laid on the burn, and a phellodendron paste seals it down; 數日自然枯落, in a few days it withers and drops off of itself. The 綱目 is describing escharotic destruction of a tumour, and it would work — the lesion would necrose and separate. The cost is in the drug list, which is as bad as anything in the Donguibogam. Five of the nine are mineral poisons, and they are applied to a deliberately burnt surface, which is the most absorptive site on the body. Frankincense and myrrh are there to hold the cake together and to mask the smell. **Contains arsenic trioxide and realgar (arsenic), red lead (lead), calomel and cinnabar (mercury), sal ammoniac (caustic) and thirty raw blister beetles (cantharidin, a blistering agent and renal toxin), all laid on an open moxa burn where they are absorbed. Arsenic trioxide is lethal in doses far below the 1 don used here, and arsenical escharotic pastes killed patients within living memory. This must not be prepared under any circumstances.** Benign soft-tissue tumours are excised; anything being destroyed without first being identified may be a malignancy, and destroying it leaves no specimen and no margin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
