Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治霍亂後, 虛煩自利, 手足冷. 卽竹葉石膏湯, 去石膏, 加炮附子二錢也. 《入門》

Translation

Treats vacuity vexation after sudden turmoil, with spontaneous diarrhoea and cold hands and feet. That is, Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction with the gypsum removed and 2 don of blast-fried aconite added. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One substitution and the formula reverses direction: take out the gypsum, put in aconite, and a cold clearing prescription becomes a warm one. The name is the same hexagram as Gijecheongsin-san above — fire below and water above — but the problem here is the opposite. The vexation is real and so is the cold, and the formula treats both at once rather than choosing. 虛煩 with cold limbs and diarrhoea after acute illness is collapse rather than heat, which is why the chapter places it at 5.14 rather than among the fire formulas. **Contains aconite, which is toxic.
