Donguibogam

Translation

Geumsu-jeon: take ripe red goji berries, steep them in wine for two months, strain them out and grind them to a mash, filter off the dregs through cloth, take the juice together with the wine they were steeped in, and boil it down to a paste in a silver or stone vessel; take two large spoonfuls down with warm wine daily, twice a day. Taken over a long time one may grow feathers and fly. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Sinhyeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

羽化, to grow feathers and fly, is the Daoist term for transcendence, and it is what the Body chapter means by longevity — not a long old age but an escape from the body altogether. The preparation itself is a two-month wine infusion reduced to a paste in a silver or stone vessel, and the vessel matters: the Bogam specifies non-reactive ware wherever a long reduction is involved, as it forbids iron for rehmannia. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
