Dispel Wind Elixir

Geopung-dan

한글 거풍단  ·  Pinyin Qu Feng Dan

去風丹

豆淋酒 is wine in which black soybeans have been steeped; it is the vehicle, not an ingredient. The drying method — spread on a sieve suspended over water — keeps the duckweed from shrivelling. The Bogam's edition of the verse has a damaged character in 鐵僕.

Translation

Treats all wind diseases, and paralytic wind, great wind and lockjaw. Purple-backed duckweed, any amount; gather it in the first ten days or on the fifteenth of the seventh month, spread it inside a bamboo sieve with water beneath, sun-dry and powder it, make honey pills the size of a bullet, and dissolve one in black soybean wine. The verse: Heaven makes a numinous herb with neither root nor trunk; it is not in the hills and not on the bank. It began as flying down pursuing the east wind, and now its green stems float upon the water's face. One drug of the immortals raises a sunken illness; the time to gather me is the middle of the seventh month. Pick out whichever paralysis you please — of a little mild wind I take no account. Three pills in black soybean wine, and even an iron servant's head will break out in sweat. Also called Bupyeong-hwan. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A single herb, and the whole entry is about when and how to gather it: the first ten days or the full moon of the seventh month, dried on a sieve held over water so it does not shrink. That attention to collection time is characteristic of the single-simple tradition and of the verses that carried it. Duckweed is a genuine diaphoretic in the materia medica and remains in use for rashes and for wind-heat at the surface; the claim that three pills will sweat an iron servant is the verse's boast rather than the drug's. For the chapter's purpose it is the cheapest possible answer to the doctrine that wind is not removed without a great sweat. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
