Donguibogam

Translation

Mix a jan of lime with water to a thin paste; take whole grains of glutinous rice and set them half buried in the lime and half out of it. Overnight the rice turns clear as crystal. First open the blemish a little with a needle, put a few of the grains on it, and in about half a day the blemish's fluid runs out of itself; pick the medicine off, keep water away from it, and in two or three days it heals. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Pi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same two ingredients as the mole cake but used differently, and the observation in it is precise: a grain half buried in lime paste turns glassy overnight. What has happened is that the alkali has gelatinized the starch, and the clear part is the caustic-loaded end that goes on the skin. The instruction to keep water off afterwards is to stop the lime reactivating. **Contains caustic lime applied to broken skin. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
