Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風痰喘嗽. 人參ㆍ木香ㆍ天麻ㆍ陳皮ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ靑皮ㆍ白朮各一兩, 皂角九錢, 槐角子ㆍ半夏各七錢半. 右爲末, 薑汁糊和丸梧子大, 每五七十丸, 溫酒或薑湯呑下. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats wind phlegm with panting cough. Ginseng, costus, gastrodia, tangerine peel, red poria, unripe tangerine peel and white atractylodes, 1 nyang each; soapberry, 9 don; pagoda tree pod and pinellia, 7 don 5 fun each. Grind to a powder, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with ginger juice paste, and swallow fifty to seventy at a time down with warm wine or ginger decoction. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Gastrodia is what makes this a wind-phlegm formula rather than a plain phlegm one; the rest is a Sagunja base with the qi-moving peels, soapberry for the sticky phlegm and pagoda tree pod, which is unusual here and is in the tradition a cooling drug for the lower bowel. Being a pill taken in wine or ginger decoction, it is for the long case rather than the acute attack. **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and to be properly processed, and burnt soapberry, which is a strong irritant.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
