Translation

Treats the same as above. Notopterygium, blast-fried aconite, dry-fried fennel, blast-fried dried ginger, costus and cloves, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add a pinch of salt, and decoct together. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six drugs at an equal don, every one of them warm, with salt added to carry them downward. The hiccup being treated is the cold kind — the patient depleted after a long illness, with a cold stomach — and the formula makes no attempt to be subtle about it: aconite and dried ginger for the cold, cloves and costus and fennel for the counterflow. **Contains aconite, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** Intractable hiccup in a debilitated patient is worth medical assessment in its own right, since it can follow from anything from a diaphragmatic irritation to a central lesion. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
