Translation

Treats Heart and Gallbladder vacuous and timid, startling easily at any matter that touches one — the drool and the Qi striking against each other and transforming into varied signs. Cyperus 2 don 4 fun; red tangerine peel 1 don 2 fun; pinellia, unripe bitter orange, and bamboo shavings, 8 fun each; ginseng, white poria, bupleurum, ophiopogon, and platycodon, 6 fun each; licorice 4 fun. Cut the above, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Gyeongheombang 經驗方 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Warm the Gallbladder Decoction with cyperus promoted to chief — and that promotion is the whole formula. The base handles phlegm and the uneasy sleep it causes; the cyperus, at twice any other dose, addresses the constraint underneath. The indication names the patient exactly: someone who startles at small things, in whom phlegm and Qi collide and 'produce varied symptoms' — which is the classical way of saying the complaints keep changing. Still one of the most-used formulas in East Asian practice for anxious, easily-startled patients. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
