八物定志元

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered and bound with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds. Note on modern practice: cinnabar (朱砂) is a mercury sulfide and ox bezoar (牛黃) is an animal product now largely replaced by cultured or synthetic substitutes; contemporary preparations omit or substitute both, and the remaining seven herbs carry the formula's indication.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

補益心神, 安定魂魄, 治痰去熱, 止驚悸怔忡. 人參一兩半, 石菖蒲ㆍ遠志ㆍ茯神ㆍ白茯苓各一兩, 白朮ㆍ麥門冬各五錢, 牛黃三錢, 朱砂二錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大.

Translation

Supplements and boosts the Heart spirit, settles the ethereal and corporeal souls, treats phlegm and removes heat, and stops fright palpitations and fearful throbbing. Ginseng 1 nyang 5 don; acorus, polygala, hostwood poria, and white poria, 1 nyang each; white atractylodes and ophiopogon, 5 don each; ox bezoar 3 don; cinnabar 2 don. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds. — Donguibogam · Sin

Clinical commentary 臨床

Jeongji-hwan extended in both directions at once — ginseng raised, atractylodes and ophiopogon added to supply what is short, and a small measure of bezoar added to clear the heat that agitation generates. Its stated aims name three jobs in one line: supplement the spirit, settle the souls, and take down phlegm and heat.
