Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久嗽ㆍ勞嗽ㆍ食積嗽. 知母ㆍ貝母(同巴豆炒黃色, 去巴豆)<span class='sochu'>同二母散法</span>, 入白礬ㆍ白芨, 四味等分. 右爲末, 和薑汁, 入蜜爲丸芡實大, 含化嚥下. 或加麥門冬ㆍ陳皮ㆍ阿膠珠亦好. 《入門》

Translation

Treats long-standing cough, taxation cough and food accumulation cough. Anemarrhena and fritillaria, dry-fried together with croton until yellow and the croton then removed<span class='sochu'>by the method of Imo-san</span>, with alum and bletilla added, the four in equal parts. Grind to a powder, mix with ginger juice, add honey and make pills the size of a water-caltrop seed, to be held in the mouth, dissolved and swallowed. Or ophiopogon, tangerine peel and ass-hide glue beads may be added, which is also good. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The two mothers are anemarrhena and fritillaria, 知母 and 貝母, and the preparation is the interesting part: they are dry-fried together with croton seed, which is then picked out and thrown away. The croton is never swallowed; what it leaves behind is its oil in the two drugs, and the method was thought to carry their action deeper. Alum and bletilla are both astringent and were added for the blood in the sputum. **Croton is violently purgative and toxic. Although the source says it is removed, enough of its oil remains in the fried drugs to be dangerous, and this must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
