Clinical commentary 臨床

Phlegm reversal is defined in the section as internal vacuity contracting cold, with phlegm and qi blocking the passage so that hands and feet turn cold and numb, the patient faints, and the pulse is sunken and fine. The formula is warm throughout — lesser galangal, cinnamon bark, amomum, costus — which distinguishes it sharply from the other phlegm formulas in the chapter, and angelica is there because reversal of the extremities is a blood-level problem as much as a qi one. Note the two identically named formulas either side of this section: at 6.5.6 the name belongs to a cool throat formula, here to a warm circulatory one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
