Translation

Treats heat phlegm bound in the chest and diaphragm, which cannot be coughed up, with fullness, oppression and pain — the condition called bound phlegm. Pinellia (processed), tangerine peel and red poria 1 don each; platycodon, bitter orange and trichosanthes seed 7 pun each; coptis, scutellaria, gardenia, fritillaria, perilla seed, mulberry root bark, apricot kernel and mirabilite 5 pun each; costus and licorice 3 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct together until reduced by half, add the mirabilite and let it melt in, strain, then stir in bamboo sap and ginger juice and take. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Mirabilite is added after the decoction has been reduced and strained, never boiled with the rest. Salty and cold, it softens what has hardened, and heat would drive off the property being relied on — the same reasoning that puts bamboo sap in last. Mulberry root bark and perilla seed direct the lung downward, apricot kernel frees the qi, and the whole upper half of the formula is aimed at phlegm that has set in the chest rather than phlegm still in motion. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
