Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治眼昏, 久服能明目, 百歲可讀細書. 磁石煆醋淬七次, 細末水飛二兩, 朱砂硏水飛一兩, 沉香五錢. 右爲末, 神麴末二兩作糊和丸梧子大, 鹽湯或米飮下三五十丸, 空心. 磁石法水入腎, 朱砂法火入心, 沉香升降水火. 《直指》 ○一名神麴丸. 一方加夜明砂一兩.

Translation

Treats dim eyes; taken long it can brighten the eyes, so that at a hundred years one may read fine print. Magnetite calcined and vinegar-quenched seven times, finely powdered and water-levigated, 2 nyang; cinnabar ground and water-levigated 1 nyang; agarwood 5 don. Powder them, make a paste of 2 nyang of medicated leaven and bind into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take thirty to fifty on an empty stomach with salt decoction or rice water. Magnetite takes the pattern of water and enters the kidney; cinnabar takes the pattern of fire and enters the heart; agarwood raises and lowers water and fire. It is also called the Medicated Leaven Pill. One version adds bat droppings 1 nyang. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals with a reason given for each, and the reasoning is the neatest piece of correspondence thinking in the chapter: magnetite is water and goes to the kidney, cinnabar is fire and goes to the heart, agarwood moves between them. The promise of reading fine print at a hundred is the formula's fame; the cinnabar is why it cannot be made. **Contains cinnabar, a mercury sulphide.
