Scorpion and Blister Beetle Paste

Galmyo-go

한글 갈묘고  ·  Pinyin Xie Mao Gao

蝎猫膏

The transcription writes 蘓木 for the sappanwood and 𥂁 for the salt; the standard forms 蘇木 and 鹽 are printed, as the corpus does elsewhere. 麄剉 and 猫 are left as transcribed, both being the corpus's majority form. The second clause is headed 一方 and is a separate 得效 prescription, a drink rather than a paste; it is not registered as its own leaf.

Translation

Treats ox-hide tinea. Whole scorpion and blister beetle 10 each, croton kernels 20, sesame oil 1 nyang. Boil them together, taking out each drug as it scorches, and when all three are out add beeswax 1 don; once it has melted store it away. Rubbed on in the morning it is healed by evening, and it does not damage the skin and flesh. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 ○ Another prescription, treating ox-hide tinea over the whole body: aconite, wild aconite, fleeceflower root, angelica root and sappanwood, equal parts of each. Cut them coarsely, boil them in lard rendered in the twelfth month until the angelica root scorches, strain off the dregs, let it cool, stir in a little salt, and take a spoonful at a time in wine on an empty stomach. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two prescriptions under one head, and they work in opposite directions. The paste is pure counter-irritant: scorpion, blister beetle and croton boiled out into sesame oil and set with beeswax, with the claim 朝擦暮愈 — rubbed on in the morning, healed by evening — and the reassurance 不損皮肉, that it does not damage the skin and flesh. That reassurance is the giveaway, since cantharidin and croton oil are precisely drugs that blister skin, and the compiler is answering an objection that must have been raised. 牛皮癬, ox-hide tinea, is the thickened leathery plaque — lichen simplex chronicus where it follows scratching, and what would now often be called psoriasis where it is widespread. The appended 得效 drink reads as a systemic attempt at the same disease, with the two aconites for a chronic obstinate condition and fleeceflower root as the blood drug. **Contains blister beetle, whose cantharidin is a potent vesicant and renal toxin, croton seed, which is violently toxic, whole scorpion, and in the appended drink both 川烏 and 草烏, which are aconite. Neither part of this leaf may be prepared.** The appended prescription is swallowed, and aconite alkaloids taken by mouth are cardiotoxic at small doses. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
