Translation

Treats a weak stomach in long illness, taking no food at all and retching at the very smell of it. Four Gentlemen Decoction with the poria taken out and ginseng, astragalus and cyperus added, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of fresh ginger, and decoct in water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sagunja-tang with the poria out, a second dose of ginseng in, and astragalus and cyperus added. Taking out the poria is the point of the modification: in a patient who is taking nothing at all, nothing should be drawing fluid downward, and what is wanted is the sweet warm half of the formula only. 聞食氣卽嘔, retching at the smell of food, is the sign that brings this formula rather than one of the heat ones — a patient repelled by food rather than unable to keep it down. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
