Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

專補腎水, 兼補命門火. 熟地黃二兩, 山藥(微炒)ㆍ山茱萸各一兩, 澤瀉(酒蒸)ㆍ牡丹皮ㆍ白茯苓各八錢, 五味子(略炒) 一兩半, 肉桂五錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 五更初, 未言語時, 鹽湯, 或溫酒下五七十丸. 又晩間空腹再服. 《得效》或以此材細剉, 煎服, 名曰加減八味湯.

Translation

Supplements the kidney water exclusively and the fire of the gate of life alongside. Cooked rehmannia 2 nyang; dioscorea (lightly fried) and cornus 1 nyang each; alisma (wine-steamed), moutan bark and white poria 8 don each; schisandra (lightly fried) 1 nyang 5 don; cinnamon bark 5 don. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty to seventy at the start of the fifth watch before speaking, with salt decoction or warm wine; take again in the evening on an empty stomach. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Sin) Or cut the same ingredients fine and decoct, which is called Modified Eight Ingredients Decoction.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Palmi-hwan with the aconite removed and schisandra in its place — the fire kept as cinnamon alone, and the water helped with the sour seed that gathers. 五更初, 未言語時: taken at the start of the fifth watch before a word is spoken. The Deukhyo's dosing instruction is the Essence chapter's 3.19 practice made into a rule for the pill.
