Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治命門火不足陽虛. 熟地黃 八兩, 山藥ㆍ山茱萸 各四兩, 牡丹皮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ澤瀉 各三兩, 肉桂ㆍ附子(炮) 各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心, 溫酒, 或鹽湯下五七十丸. 若加五味子, 名曰腎氣丸. 《仲景》 又治老年水火俱虧, 腎氣虛乏, 下元冷憊, 腰痛脚軟, 夜多漩尿, 面黑口乾, 耳焦枯. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the fire of the gate of life insufficient with yang vacuity. Cooked rehmannia 8 nyang; dioscorea and cornus 4 nyang each; moutan bark, white poria and alisma 3 nyang each; cinnamon bark and aconite (blast-fried) 1 nyang each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt decoction. With schisandra added it is called Kidney Qi Pill. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Sin) It also treats the old in whom water and fire are both depleted, the kidney qi vacuous and exhausted, the lower origin cold and weary, with lumbar pain and weak legs, much urination at night, a black face, a dry mouth and scorched ears. — Immun 入門

Clinical commentary 臨床

Zhongjing's Kidney Qi Pill from the Jingui, and the root of the whole rehmannia family — Yukmijihwang-hwan is this with the two warm medicinals taken out, and the Bogam registers the six-ingredient pill under the Vacuity Taxation chapter. Six to feed the water, two to light the fire, and the Immun's second indication is the old man of the Appendix on the Aged: nocturia, weak legs, a black face. **Contains aconite, which is toxic.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
