Translation

Treats wind stroke with exuberant phlegm and inability to speak; appropriate where there is heat. Arisaema and pinellia — boiled together in a decoction of gleditsia pod, alum and fresh ginger, soaked through and dry-roasted — poria, tangerine peel, atractylodes, platycodon and bitter orange, 1 don each; scutellaria, coptis, trichosanthes seed, ginseng, tangkuei and costus, 5 fun each; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water, and take stirred with bamboo sap and ginger juice. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The heat version of the chapter's workhorse phlegm formula, and the indication says so in four characters: appropriate where there is heat. Onto the two-ancient-herbs-and-arisaema core go scutellaria, coptis and trichosanthes seed, and then ginseng and tangkuei so that a fortnight of bitter cold drugs does not empty the patient. The processing instruction for arisaema and pinellia is the same gleditsia-alum-ginger treatment the Jeonggam's Cheongsin-haeeo-tang specifies, and seeing it twice in one chapter suggests it was simply what a careful pharmacy did. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
