Clinical commentary 臨床

The phlegm-heat reading of facial palsy, and the formula is built to match it: arisaema, trichosanthes seed and fritillaria to move thick phlegm, wine-fried coptis and scutellaria to take the heat out of it, and the two aromatics stirred in at the end to move the qi that holds it. Wine-frying the bitter cold drugs is the detail worth noticing — it blunts their cold and directs them upward to the face, which is exactly what a formula for a facial complaint needs. Cassia bark among all this cooling is the Hoechun's hedge against driving the condition inward. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
