Translation

Into any medicine for vomiting, nosebleed or hawking of blood in vacuity, put 1 hop of child's urine each time, and the effect is very quick. Used alone, warmed in a double boiler and taken at a draught, it never fails to answer. Urine downbears fire and enriches the yin, and can also dissolve stagnant blood and stop vomiting, nosebleed and all bleeding. The worthies of old said: in any loss of blood, of those who take cold and cooling medicines not one in ten lives, and of those who take urine not one in a hundred dies — and these words are to be believed. Use one cup of child's urine with two or three drops of ginger juice stirred in evenly, take slowly, and two or three times a day is best. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's closing argument, and it is a strong one: cold medicines for bleeding kill nine in ten, urine saves ninety-nine in a hundred. The claim is that a substance from the body cools without the harm that mineral and plant cold does. Child's urine runs through the whole of the Blood chapter as a vehicle — Cheongnyuk-tang, Cheonghwajaeum-tang, and the Women chapter's postpartum formulas all use it — and here it is given alone. Urine is sterile when passed and contains urea, which is mildly diuretic; the tradition's confidence in it goes well beyond that. **Ingesting urine carries an infection risk and has no established benefit. Persistent bleeding requires medical assessment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
