Translation

Also called Yunjo-tang. Treats blood dryness with the stool bound and inhibited. Tangkuei, rhubarb, cooked rehmannia, peach kernel, hemp seed and raw licorice, 1 don each; raw rehmannia and cimicifuga, 7 fun each; safflower, 2 fun. Cut up; first make a packet of the seven drugs and decoct down to half, then put in the peach kernel and hemp seed and decoct again to half; take on an empty stomach. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Blood dryness is the chapter's reading of the constipation that follows blood loss or childbirth, and the treatment is to moisten rather than to purge — though a don of rhubarb is kept in. What deserves notice is the decoction instruction: the peach kernel and hemp seed go in only at the halfway point, because their action is in the oil and prolonged boiling drives it off. That is a real pharmaceutical observation, and it recurs through the moistening formulas. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
