Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治三焦火熱. 黃連ㆍ黃柏ㆍ黃芩ㆍ大黃各等分. 右爲末, 水丸小豆大. 溫水下二三十丸. ○去大黃, 加梔子, 名曰梔子金花丸, 又名旣濟解毒丸. 《宣明》

Translation

Treats the fire heat of the triple burner. Coptis, phellodendron, scutellaria, and rhubarb, in equal parts. Powder the above and bind with water into pills the size of adzuki beans; take 20–30 pills with warm water. — Removing the rhubarb and adding gardenia, it is named Chijageumhwa-hwan, also called Gijehaedok-hwan. — Seonmyeong 宣明 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Xuanming's four-flower standard — the three bitter siblings plus rhubarb, so the fire leaves by the door as well as the bloodstream. The variant note is the elegant part: swap rhubarb for gardenia and the pill is renamed for the I Ching's hexagram of completion, 旣濟 — water over fire, the purgation already accomplished.
