Translation

Resolves doubly-affected cold damage; or cold damage showing a wind pulse and wind damage showing a cold pulse, with fever, aversion to cold, no sweating, headache and a stiff nape. Raw rehmannia, anemarrhena and chuanxiong, 1 don each; notopterygium, saposhnikovia, pubescent angelica, stephania, scutellaria, coptis, atractylodes lancea and atractylodes, 7 fun each; asarum and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. If it does not resolve, take three or four more packets. This prescription treats the case where yin and yang are already distinguished and the yang signs predominate. — Dongwon 東垣 · Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Li Dongyuan's formula, and the Immun's note pairs it with the preceding entry as a matched choice: where yin and yang cannot yet be told apart, use Tao's probing decoction; where they can and the yang signs predominate, use this. The construction differs accordingly — raw rehmannia and anemarrhena lead rather than the surface drugs, and coptis and scutellaria give it a cooling interior that Tao's formula lacks. The instruction to repeat three or four packets if it does not resolve is the kind of dosing note that shows the formula was used on real cases rather than copied from a list. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
