Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治兩感傷寒陰陽未分者, 以此探之. 羌活ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ防風ㆍ川芎ㆍ生地黃ㆍ黃芩ㆍ柴胡ㆍ乾葛ㆍ白芷ㆍ石膏各一錢, 細辛ㆍ甘草各三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 黑豆三七粒, 同煎服. 《入門》 ○一名衝和靈寶飮. 《必用》

Translation

Treats doubly-affected cold damage where yin and yang are not yet distinguished; use this to probe it. Notopterygium, atractylodes lancea, saposhnikovia, chuanxiong, raw rehmannia, scutellaria, bupleurum, pueraria, angelica dahurica and gypsum, 1 don each; asarum and licorice, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two jujubes and twenty-one black soybeans, and decoct together. Clinical commentary 臨床

A formula given to find out what the illness is. Doubly-affected cold damage means both an exterior and an interior channel struck at once, and the chapter has just declared it a fatal pattern; faced with that and unable to tell yin from yang, Tao Hua's answer is to give a broad formula and watch what happens. The composition covers every channel the chapter recognizes — notopterygium and saposhnikovia for taiyang, pueraria and gypsum for yangming, bupleurum for shaoyang, asarum for shaoyin — so that whichever way the case declares itself, something in it is already working.
