Drunken Immortal Powder

Chwiseon-san

한글 취선산  ·  Pinyin Zui Xian San

醉仙散

The transcription writes 𥂁 for 鹽; the standard form is printed. 幷 and 灸 are printed as the transcription has them, the corpus not normalising 並/幷 or 灸/炙. 同炒, stir-fried together, is a preparation covering the first four drugs and is given in parentheses. The calomel is not a fixed weight in the formula but 二錢 added to every 十五錢 of finished powder, and the gram figure is for that ratio. 茶淸 is recorded under sechacha, following the corpus.

Translation

Treats the great wind leprous sore. Black sesame, burdock seed, goji berry and vitex fruit, 1 nyang each, stir-fried together; tribulus, sophora root, trichosanthes root and siler, 5 don each. Powder the above fine; to every 15 don of the powder add calomel 2 don and mix evenly. One don to a dose, stirred into clear tea, one dose each morning, noon and evening. After five to seven days a foul yellow saliva comes out first from within the tooth sockets, the whole body aches and is oppressed as though drunk, and then pus and blood and a foul stinking vapour are purged downward, and the root of the disease is gone. — Dansim 丹心 ○ While taking this medicine the patient must give up salt, soy sauce, vinegar, fish and flesh of every kind, greasy things and anything roasted or broiled, and eat only thin gruel and boiled seasonal vegetables, together with black-striped snake and pit viper boiled in weak wine, to assist the strength of the medicine. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The upper of the two routes the 大風瘡 section sets out: 在上者以醉仙散取臭涎惡血於齒縫中出, disease seated above is taken with Chwiseon-san, which brings the foul saliva and bad blood out through the tooth sockets, while disease seated below goes to Tongcheonjaejo-san and out through the stool. The Dansim adds that both routes run through the Yang Brightness, stomach and large intestine, and so reach the spleen and lung, which govern flesh and skin. Eight wind-and-damp drugs carry the formula, but what produces the described effect is the calomel. Salivation, a foul taste, aching and oppression after five to seven days, then purging — this is a clinical description of acute mercury poisoning, and the chapter has read it as the drug working. The dietary interdiction is severe and the chapter is explicit that the whole regimen fails without it: 若不絶味斷慾, 皆不免再發而終於不救. **Contains calomel, a mercury salt, and must not be prepared.** Mercury accumulates in kidney and brain; the stomatitis and salivation taken here as signs of cure are the first signs of toxicity, and the chapter itself records mercury poisoning as a complication of treatment at the syphilis section — 或誤服水銀輕粉而成風堆腫爛流膿出汁. Hansen's disease is curable with rifampicin, dapsone and clofazimine. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
