Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治虛勞, 腎虛陽衰. 蓮肉六兩, 白茯苓二兩, 秋石一兩, 川椒ㆍ茴香(幷微炒) 各五錢. 右爲末, 以人乳汁和丸梧子大. 溫酒或米飮下五七十丸. 《必用》

Translation

Treats vacuity taxation with the Kidney vacuous and the Yang waning. Lotus seed flesh 6 nyang; white poria 2 nyang; autumn mineral 1 nyang; Sichuan pepper and fennel, both lightly dry-fried, 5 don each. Powder the above and bind with human milk into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 50–70 pills with warm wine or thin rice water. — Piryong 必用 (Donguibogam · Heoro)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The reasoning behind 秋石 — 'autumn mineral,' a salt crystallized from urine through repeated evaporation — is that what the Kidney has spent can be reclaimed and returned to it. Modern chemistry would note that such preparations do contain steroid metabolites, which makes the classical intuition less strange than it first sounds.
