Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治合目則麻作, 開目則不麻, 四肢痿厥, 目昏頭眩. 黃芪 二錢, 蒼朮ㆍ陳皮 各一錢半, 人參ㆍ白朮ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ猪苓 各一錢, 羌活 七分, 升麻ㆍ甘草 各五分, 獨活ㆍ當歸ㆍ黃栢 各三分, 柴胡ㆍ神麴ㆍ木香ㆍ草豆蔲ㆍ麻黃ㆍ黃連 各二分. 右剉, 分作二貼, 水煎服之. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats numbness arising when the eyes are closed and absent when they are opened, with the four limbs wilting and reverting, dim eyes and dizziness of the head. Astragalus 2 don; atractylodes lancea and tangerine peel 1 don 5 pun each; ginseng, white atractylodes, white peony, alisma and polyporus 1 don each; notopterygium 7 pun; cimicifuga and licorice 5 pun each; angelica pubescens, Korean angelica and phellodendron 3 pun each; bupleurum, medicated leaven, saussurea, katsumadai, ephedra and coptis 2 pun each. Cut up and divide into two packets, then decoct in water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Pi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty medicinals, and Dongwon's most characteristic piece of reasoning sits in the indication. The Lingshu holds that opening the eyes sets the yang pathway going and closing them shuts it, so numbness that comes only with the eyes shut is read as yang already too weak to travel on its own. The formula lifts and drains at once — astragalus and cimicifuga above, alisma and polyporus below — with fourteen drugs at two or three pun each doing the fine adjusting. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
