Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治産難. 白芷(炒黑)ㆍ百草霜ㆍ滑石各等分. 右爲末, 芎歸湯煎水, 調下二三錢. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats a hard birth. Angelica dahurica dry-fried to black, stove soot, and talcum, in equal parts. Powder the above; take 2–3 don stirred into water in which Gunggwi-tang has been decocted. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three powders, and the vehicle is the formula's other half — the angelica-and-cnidium pair decocted as the liquid, so that the stalling agents ride on a Blood-moving base. Stove soot, scraped from the underside of a cooking pot, is the tradition's standing hemostatic and settling powder; here it is paired with talcum's slipperiness on the reasoning that a birth needs both holding and sliding at once. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
