Translation

Treats vexing thirst after sudden turmoil with vomiting and diarrhoea, where the patient cannot take medicine, or where neither water nor medicine will go past the lips. Black pepper and mung bean, forty-nine grains each. Grind to a powder and give stirred into newly drawn water, or decoct in water and take. Also called Hocho-tang: seven grains of black pepper and twenty-one of mung bean, powdered and given stirred into Quince Decoction. — Uihak Immun 入門 · Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Gwallan)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two grains counted out rather than weighed, one hot and one cold, in equal number. The indication is the practical problem of the recovery phase: a thirsty patient who vomits everything, including the medicine. A tiny dose of a pungent spice with a cooling bean, stirred into cold water, is as near as the pharmacy of the time came to an antiemetic sip. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
