Clinical commentary 臨床

Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction with bitter orange added, and the addition is what makes it a relapse formula rather than a simple heat-venting one. Relapse from exertion means a patient who got up too soon and drove the residual heat back into the chest; fermented soybean at a large dose lifts it out through a light sweat, gardenia cools what is left, and the bitter orange breaks the fullness that the heat creates as it is pushed back in. The endpoint is a slight sweat and no more — a full sweat in a convalescent costs more than it gains. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
