Translation

Treats relapse from eating with fever. Gardenia, bitter orange and bupleurum, 1 don each; fermented soybean, 5 don; rhubarb, 3 don. Cut up and decoct in water. For abdominal distension add magnolia bark; for damage from meat add crataegus; for damage from noodles or cooked rice add medicated leaven. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The companion to the exertion formula, for relapse brought on by eating instead, and rhubarb is what distinguishes them: food relapse needs the bowel opened, exertion relapse does not. The three modifications are a small course in the Bogam's dietetics — magnolia bark for distension, crataegus for meat, medicated leaven for grain and noodles — and they are still the standard pairings. A convalescent stomach cannot handle a full meal, and the Bogam treats the resulting fever as a real relapse rather than mere indigestion, which is why gardenia, bupleurum and fermented soybean stay in the formula alongside the digestive work. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
