Donguibogam

Translation

Treats the same as the above. Gardenia, seven; male rat droppings, seven pieces; bitter orange, one, parched. Cut up, take a cup and a half of water, add two chi of scallion white and thirty grains of fermented soybean, decoct together down to one cup and take in two doses. Do not let the patient know. — Hwarin 活人 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This is not a formula to prepare.** Rat droppings carry leptospirosis, hantavirus and salmonella, and no classical indication justifies that. The entry is worth keeping for its last four characters: do not let the patient know. The Bogam preserved the instruction because the compilers understood that a patient who learns what is in the cup will not drink it, and the candour is more informative than the drug. The pattern — relapse from exertion — is properly met by the preceding formula, which does the same work with gardenia, fermented soybean and bitter orange alone. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
