Heavenly Mouse Powder

한글 천서산  ·  Pinyin Tian Shu San

天䑕散

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久咳嗽上氣, 十年諸藥不差. 蝙蝠(除翅足, 燒令焦)爲末, 和飮服之妙. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats long-standing cough with qi rising, of ten years' standing, which no medicine has mended. Take a bat, remove the wings and feet, burn it until charred, powder it, and give it stirred into a drink; excellent. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One charred bat, for a cough of ten years that nothing has touched. The name is a euphemism and the logic is the tradition's 飛 reasoning — a creature of the air for an illness of the air — and it belongs with the dung-ball elixir of the 嘔吐 chapter as a measure of what was left to try when everything had failed. **This must not be prepared. Bats are reservoirs of rabies virus, coronaviruses, Marburg and Nipah viruses, and handling or preparing one is a serious infection risk.** A cough of ten years needs imaging and spirometry, not a last resort. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
