Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風痰壅塞. 猪牙皂角二片, 玄胡索七箇, 靑黛二錢. 右爲末, 取一字水調, 令病人仰臥, 灌男左女右鼻中, 却令正坐, 咬筆管, 其涎自出. 《得效》

Translation

Treats wind phlegm congested and blocking. Gleditsia two pods, corydalis seven pieces, indigo 2 don. Powder them and mix 1 ja with water; have the patient lie face up and pour it into the nostril — the left for a man, the right for a woman — then have them sit upright and bite on a brush handle, and the drool issues of itself. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · To)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not an emetic at all but a nasal instillation, and the chapter gives the method its own section at 6.8. The drug goes in through the nose, the patient sits up, and gravity and the biting do the rest. 咬筆管 — biting on a brush handle — holds the mouth open and the jaw forward so that secretions run out rather than back. That is a reasonable airway manoeuvre. 男左女右, left for a man and right for a woman, is convention rather than anatomy and recurs throughout the Bogam. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
