Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑
治中風卒倒. 搐鼻卽甦. 川芎 一兩半, 石膏 七錢半, 藜蘆 五錢, (生)甘草 一錢半. 右細末, 口中噙水取一字, 搐入鼻中. 《丹心》
Translation
Treats wind stroke with sudden collapse; blown into the nose, the patient revives at once. Chuanxiong 1 nyang 5 don, gypsum 7 don 5 pun, black false hellebore root 5 don, raw licorice 1 don 5 pun. Powder finely; have water held in the mouth, take 1 ja and blow it into the nostril. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · To)
Clinical commentary 臨床
口中噙水 — water held in the mouth — is the working detail, and it protects the operator rather than the patient: holding water prevents the powder being inhaled while blowing it.
搐鼻, insufflation into the nose, provokes violent sneezing, and the chapter uses it where the patient cannot swallow. Whether it revives anyone is another matter, but sneezing was taken as proof the orifices had opened.
