Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治酒濕. 蒼朮二錢, 陳皮一錢半, 赤芍藥ㆍ赤茯苓各一錢, 黃柏ㆍ威靈仙ㆍ羌活ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats alcohol damp. Atractylodes lancea 2 don; tangerine peel 1.5 don; red peony and red poria 1 don each; phellodendron, clematis, notopterygium and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Seup)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The section at 3.8.7 makes a pointed argument. Alcohol damp produces deviation of the mouth and eye, hemiplegia, a stiff tongue and laboured speech — 渾似中風, exactly like wind stroke — and the instruction is to drain the damp toxin and **not** to treat it as wind and sweat it. The distinction matters because the treatments diverge sharply: sweating a depleted drinker would make matters worse. Whether the underlying condition was alcoholic neuropathy or a stroke in a heavy drinker, the caution against sweating was sound. **Sudden facial deviation with speech difficulty is a stroke until proved otherwise and requires emergency care.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
