Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治脾精不禁, 小便漏濁淋瀝不止, 手足力乏, 腰背攣疼. 專用蒼朮等劑以斂脾精. 斂脾謂何. 精生於穀也. 蒼朮(製) 四兩, 茴香(炒)ㆍ川練子肉各七錢半, 川烏(炮)ㆍ破故紙(炒)ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ龍骨各一兩. 右爲末, 酒麵糊和丸梧子大, 朱砂爲衣, 空心米飮下五七十丸. 《直指》

Translation

Treats the spleen's essence not held, with turbid urine leaking and dribbling without stop, the hands and feet without strength, and cramping pain in lumbus and back. Atractylodes lancea and the like are used expressly to gather in the spleen's essence. What is meant by gathering the spleen? That the essence is engendered from grain. Atractylodes lancea (processed) 4 nyang; fennel (stir-fried) and toosendan flesh 7 don 5 pun each; aconite main root (blast-fried), psoralea (stir-fried), white poria and dragon bone 1 nyang each. Powder them, bind with wine-flour paste into pills the size of a firmiana seed, coated with cinnabar, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with rice water. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Sobyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

斂脾謂何, 精生於穀也 — what does gathering the spleen mean? That essence comes from grain. The Jikji asks its own question and answers it: turbidity is essence leaking out, and essence is made in the stomach, so the spleen is where to hold it. **Contains aconite main root and a cinnabar coating, both toxic.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
