Clinical commentary 臨床

Zhongjing's formula, and the same kidney accumulation that Bundon-hwan attacks with croton frost and aconite is here treated with no purgative whatever. Plum root bark is the signature medicinal and appears nowhere else in this chapter; it is cold and specifically downbears surging qi. The rest is a blood-harmonizing set with pinellia to settle the counterflow. The two formulas together make the section's point better than any single passage. Running piglet arises from fright, the qi rushes up and subsides, and there is nothing solid to attack — so a formula that attacks and a formula that settles are both offered, and the practitioner chooses by whether a mass can actually be felt. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
