Eggshell Membrane Powder

Bongui-san

한글 봉의산  ·  Pinyin Feng Yi San

鳳衣散

鳳凰衣 has no entry of its own in the herb list; the leaf's own interlinear gloss identifies it as 雞抱卵殼, the shell of a brooded egg, and it is entered under 雞卵殼 on that authority, with the identification kept in the preparation. That gloss is an interlinear 細註 in the transcription and is printed in a sochu span, not in parentheses. 鴨子淸, the white of a duck's egg, is entered under 鴨子. 煆 is left as the transcription and the corpus both print it.

Translation

Treats chancre. Calcined phoenix robe — that is, the shell of an egg a hen has brooded — and red lead 1 don each; calomel and borneol a small amount each. Powder the above and dust it on dry, or work it up with the white of a duck's egg and apply it. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Calcined eggshell and red lead at a don each, with a pinch of calomel and a pinch of borneol, dusted dry on the sore or bound up with duck-egg white. The eggshell is the bulk and the absorbent, borneol is the cooling aromatic that takes the sting out, and the two heavy metals are there as the supposed actives. The leaf is worth keeping for its gloss as much as its composition: 鳳凰衣, phoenix robe, is explained in the text itself as the shell of an egg a hen has sat on, which is how a materia medica term that would otherwise be opaque gets pinned down. Calcined shell on an ulcer does the same absorbent work as the clamshell powder of the leaf above. **Contains red lead (lead tetroxide) and calomel (mercurous chloride). Both are absorbed through ulcerated skin, and a chancre is exactly the surface that will absorb them; lead and mercury accumulate and cause nephropathy, neuropathy and, for mercury, the swollen ulcerating gums and skin eruption the chapter itself records at 2.2 as a complication of mercury treatment. This must not be prepared.** Raw duck-egg white on an open sore is also a Salmonella risk. What survives is the plain principle: after the wash, dust the surface with something absorbent and leave it dry. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
