Supplement the Yin Pill

Boeum-hwan

한글 보음환  ·  Pinyin Bu Yin Wan

補陰丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered, worked with refined honey and three strips of pork spinal marrow, blended evenly into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 80–90 pills on an empty stomach with salted water or warm wine. Distinct from the Immun's Boeum-hwan of the Vacuity Taxation chapter — same name, different formula. The formula's preamble is its doctrine: in humankind the Yin is constantly insufficient and the Yang constantly in surplus — therefore constantly supplement the Yin, that Yin and Yang stand level and there be no illness; hence the medicine that supplements Yin, from youth to old age, may not be lacking.

Translation

Treats Yin vacuity with fire stirring. In humankind the Yin is constantly insufficient and the Yang constantly in surplus: therefore constantly supplement the Yin, so that Yin stands level with Yang, and there is no illness — hence the medicine that supplements the Yin, from youth to old age, may not be lacking. Prepared rehmannia 5 nyang; phellodendron (salt-and-wine-fried to brown), wine-fried anemarrhena, and butter-roasted turtle plastron, 3 nyang each; butter-roasted cynomorium, lycium fruit, wine-fried white peony, and asparagus root, 2 nyang each; schisandra 1 nyang; dried ginger fried to purple, 4 don — increased to 6 in winter cold. Powder the above, work refined honey and three strips of pork spinal marrow in evenly, and form pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 80–90 on an empty stomach with salted water or warm wine. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Danxi's signature thesis — Yang always in surplus, Yin always in arrears — issued here as a standing prescription, its preamble declaring the pill a lifelong companion 'from youth to old age.' Turtle plastron and pork spinal marrow bring Yin as substance, not metaphor; the purple-fried ginger keeps one coal alive in all that cold. The chapter's philosophy cabinet: a worldview you can swallow at bedtime. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
