Donguibogam

Translation

Treats paralysis with the effect of a spirit. Cooked marrow from within the ox bone, one bowl; refined honey, 1 geun — strain the two, add 1 geun of dry-roasted wheat flour and 3 nyang of dry-roasted dried ginger powder, mix evenly and form into balls the size of a bullet. Take three or four a day, chewed finely and sent down with warm wine, to great effect. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a medicine at all but a confection — bone marrow, honey, roasted flour and ginger, rolled into balls and chewed three or four times a day with wine. Under the tradition's reasoning, marrow replenishes marrow and the sinews follow; read plainly, it is a dense, palatable high-fat high-sugar food for a bedbound patient who is not eating. For post-stroke undernutrition that is a more useful intervention than most of what precedes it in the chapter, and the Hoechun's claim of wonderful effect is probably honest about what it saw. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
